The Government studying whether transsexuals can change name without
hormone treatments

The Government will have a time limit of one year to study whether to
agree to eliminate the requirement for transsexuals to undergo hormone
treatment for two years to be able to change their name in the Civil
Registry and on their ID cards, which is currently required by the
Gender Identity Law passed in March of last year. That was the request
which came up yesterday in the [Spanish] Congress of Deputies after
unanimous approval of the initiative presented by the National Basque
Party (PNV) by all the powers that be politically. Even the PP voted
in favor of more flexible requirements for name change of transsexuals
even though they did not vote for the Gender Identity Law at the time.
Presently [in Spain] there is no requirement for transsexuals to
undergo any sex change operation before legal changing their gender
and name on public documents, but proof of hormone treatments for two
years is still required.
